School Based Services |
| |
The children and youth served in school-based mental health programs are provided services with parental permission. The only exception to this rule is in cases of emergency such as harm to self or others. Even in these circumstances parental permission is sought as soon as possible. Parents are always included in the treatment process for children and youth. Students are referred for services by parents, school staff and/or self-referrals. Parents are able to access mental health services for their child upon entering a school and requesting to talk with the therapist. School staff may also initiate the referral process for parents concerning the need for and/or availability of services. Once the parent agrees to the referral the therapist calls the parent to discuss and assess the needs of the child, family and school. Prevention programs in schools seek to intervene early in order to deter emotional difficulties.
